A middle-aged woman has been arrested for allegedly attempting to bury her dead husband in a bush.
The suspect, Madam Ama Bentiwa, told journalists they had been married for 15 years at Mankessim in the Central Region of Ghana.
The deceased, Mr. John Aggrey, aka Coffie, is said to have died at about 2:00 am on Monday, February 27, 2023 at the age of 70.
The woman who gave her age as 63 said all efforts to locate any family member when the husband was alive proved futile.
According to her, the husband refused to tell her his hometown and on several occasions, she pestered him to at least introduce her to the family but he declined on all occasions.
Even when his uncle died, Madam Bentiwa said she impressed on him to allow her to accompany him to the funeral but the man denied her that opportunity.
She said the husband told her that he was the only one left alive among his family after the demise of the uncle, and therefore asked her not to worry about meeting any family member.
Residents attested to the fact the man had lived a sort of lonely life as he hardly shares any information about himself and when he was unwell, he never opened up to people.
Coffie who was a lotto agent was struck by stroke and was recovering until last week when he relapsed, leading to his death.
The wife then hired some men to assist her to bury her husband secretly in a bush.
The deceased was allegedly put in a sack and kept in a room waiting for night to be buried, but luck eluded her when some neighbors got wind of her intention and reported the matter to the police.
The angry residents after hearing the incident accosted her. They had threatened to beat her up but others intervened.
But the woman’s family have denied claims by residents that she had wanted to bury the late husband secretly.
Meanwhile, the body has since been deposited at the Mankessim Roman Catholic Hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation.
