The song “As the deer” was written by Marty Nystrom in 1981. He had been fasting for many days, waiting upon the Lord, after his heart had been broken by a young lady.
On the 19th day of the fast, as he sat behind the piano, he noticed a bible on the music stand opened to Psalm 42. His eyes stuck to the first verse, and a song began to burst out of his spirit.
This explains why someone once said that, “God, when he’s trying to speak to me, takes away things that distract me.”
May you be inspired by the lyrics of this song to yearn for a closer walk with God.
1 As the deer panteth for the waters
So my soul panteth after Thee
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship you.
You alone are my strength and shield
To you alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship you.
2. I want you more than gold or silver
Only you can satisfy
You alone are the real joy giver
And the apple of my eye.
3. You are my friend and you are my brother
Even though you are a King
I love you more than any other
So much more than anything
“As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God.” (Psalm 42:1)
