‘Fake’ doctor behind viral tape on police unprofessionalism busted

January 20, 2023

The man who claimed to be a doctor in a viral audio tape accusing personnel of the Ghana Police Service of planting narcotics in his car has been arrested.

Police initial checks have revealed that the suspect is not a doctor as he claimed in the audio.

However, it was established that he is indeed called Patrick Asiedu who is an Uber driver.

The suspect elaborately and eloquently described an alleged incident of criminal behaviour on the part of some unnamed police officers. In the audio tape that was widely circulated on social media, the man introduced himself as Dr Patrick Asiedu and claimed that he had been stopped by some police officers who planted substances suspected to be narcotics in his car and attempted to extort money from him.

Unable to verify the wild claims in what had appeared to be sending the police on a wild goose chase, the police mounted a manhunt for Patrick Asiedu.

“The Police, today, 18th January, 2023 have arrested a man suspected to be the person in the audio tape,” the police confirmed his arrest in a press release.

“Police investigations, so far, have established that the man who has been arrested and is in police custody, is indeed called Patrick Asiedu, he is an Uber driver and not a Doctor.”

According to the police, their investigations show that the entire story narrated in the audio tape is false and a total fabrication by the suspect.

“The supposed military intervention and the alleged fight between the Police officers and the military described in such dramatic detail in the audio tape are all false and a figment of the suspect’s imagination,” the release said.

“Equally false are the vivid descriptions of having been taken to the Accra Central and East Legon Police Stations as well as the Narcotics Control Commission.  The claims of fingerprints being taken are all also untrue.”

The suspect, however, told the police that he had once witnessed a similar incident to what he described in the audio tape, which he said happened to one of his passengers.

“Meanwhile, in another audio tape that has come to the attention of the Police, the suspect alleges to have met with the Inspector-General of Police. We wish to categorically state that this claim is also false and should be disregarded.

“Investigations are still ongoing and suspect Patrick Asiedu who is currently in police custody will be brought to face justice.”

who would your most humble servant be?

At a time when power is flaunted more than it is earned, we rise with a different call: #TumiNniSuban—Power without character is nothing. We are done with leaders who wear authority like a costume but lack the soul to serve. Leadership must reflect the people’s dignity, not diminish it. So we ask If elections were held today, who would your most humble servant be?
