Despite being the first batch to commence the new curriculum, some students within the Tema enclave do not have access to the new textbooks to aid teaching and learning.
According to the Tema Regional Branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), schools in Tema and its surroundings have not received textbooks for the new curriculum for Junior High School (JHS) Two.
While admitting that the form two students were the first group to commence the new curriculum, the Tema Regional Chairman of GNAT, Mr Abednego Tettey Nuertey, reported that basic schools in the Tema Metropolis, Tema West, Ashaiman, and the Kpone-Katamanso municipalities are yet to receive the JHS Two textbooks three weeks into the reopening of schools for the 2023 academic year.
In an interview with GNA, Mr. Tettey Neurtey said teachers either use their own resources to obtain information on the internet or use alternative books for teaching.
He added that students are given topics to research and study from the internet in private schools. He however admitted that it is not the best since students would be exposed to unwanted materials which pop-up during searches.
Mr Nuertey thus, encouraged the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to ensure that the books reach the schools on time to make teaching and learning effective.
