At least 48 persons have been rounded up by the security personnel deployed at Ahwiaa in the Kwabre East of the Ashanti region following a fatal clash between two groups on Monday. One person was butchered to death and several properties destroyed during the clash. A man who had his hand chopped off is said to be in critical condition receiving treatment at the Ankaase Methodist hospital. “It is not a good thing, it is very bad and I condemn it in no uncertain terms,” municipal chief executive for Kwabre East, Nana Osei Assibey Bonsu told Etornam Sey on 3FM’s evening news Monday. Though the police cum military presence is visible in the community, the MCE said he has been in constant touch with the municipal police commander who has assured him of reinforcement to counter any reprisal. Mr. Assibey later told Issah Monnie on TV3’s News360 that although everything is calm in the area, “the police are on red alert to make sure everything is brought under control”. This is the second time in less than 30 days that the town has recorded some form of violent clashes. The first was in February, the MCE confirmed, involving two other groups. He said Monday’s clash was between the youth from the “Zongo line” and their counterparts in the “Ashanti line”. He said investigation is underway to establish what caused Monday’s clash.
