File photo: David Asante-Apeatu[/caption] Angry youth from zongo communities in the Ashanti region stoned and chased away the Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu, and his entourage who are in the region to broker peace following the killing of seven persons police branded as armed robbers. Soon after Friday prayers at the Kumasi Central Mosque, some angry zongo youth brought out placards to register their displeasure about the killings on Tuesday at Poano. They accused the police of killing innocent people. They alleged that the police have developed the penchant for killing innocent persons and tagging them as armed robbers. [caption id="attachment_92108" align="aligncenter" width="605"] The youth had a violent protest Thursday to register their displeasure[/caption] The youth are calling for the dismissal of the region’s police commander, accusing him of peddling untruth to the public after claiming the murdered were suspected armed robbers. Just when the IGP and the Ashanti Regional Police Commander arrived at the central mosque to meet with the leadership of the zongo communities, the angry youth started pelting them with stones. It took the intervention of a re-enforcement team to move the IGP and the regional commander to safety. The police fired several warning-shots in order to disperse the irate youth and drive away the crowd from the streets. Business activity came to a halt in the area. Meanwhile, some relatives of the deceased and the Asokore Mampong Municipal chief executive however claimed some of the identified victims were not robbers.
