The youth staged a violent protest to register their displeasure[/caption] A five-member committee has been inaugurated to investigate the killing of seven alleged armed robbers at Manso Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region. A signed statement from the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah on Monday said the committee is to investigate the circumstances that led to the killing of the “gang of 7” suspected armed robbers on July 17. The committee will be chaired by a Justice of the Superior Court in the region. It is also made up of a representative from the Christian Community, Muslim community, Regional BNI as well as the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council. Relatives of the seven suspects have consistently stated that the deceased were not armed robbers. They have held on to their point that the police in Kumasi conspired against the deceased and planted weapons after what some have described as inhuman act. Read: Police killed 7 innocent citizens: families dispute robbery claims The event happened few days after armed robbers killed a police officer and injured another officer in a gun battle in the same neighborhood. Meanwhile, the police also insist the seven were part of eight armed robbers whose attack led to the untimely death of the police officer with the SWAT Unit at Ayirebikrom near Manso Nkwanta. The setting up of the committee, which family members and some residents of the Zongo community where the deceased lived have called for, would ease the tension which gripped the area since their murder. There have been a series of violent reactions following the death of the gang of 7. Irate youth of the Zongo community nearly set a police station in the vicinity on fire. They even stoned and chased away the Inspector General of Police who visited the area with his entourage in the heat of the issue.
