The Chairman of the Council of Elders for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in South Africa, Benjamin Kofi Quashie has lashed out at the NPP stalwarts – Alan Kyerematen and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto – for abandoning a sinking ship they intend to captain.
According to Mr. Quashie, their resignation is a sign of bad faith and indicates that politicians, especially members of the NPP government, don’t care about Ghanaians, but themselves.
He explained that the two are cabinet ministers who wield critical positions in the NPP administration necessary for the development of the economy; thus, their exit at this critical moment may cause further turmoil for the already distressed economy.
Speaking in an interview on Onua TV, Benjamin Quashie said “the Ghanaian politician as can be seen among the NPP don’t think about the development of the nation but rather they think about the next election. We have major economic challenges causing the nation to retrogress and key cabinet ministers choose to resign two years into an election to follow their presidential ambition…”
He buttressed his point with the fact that both Alan Kyerematen and Akoto Afriyie – Trade and Industry, and Agriculture Ministers respectively – are part of the cabinet that take critical decisions and should have been more focused on fixing the economy they messed up rather than quitting to pursue personal interests.
He further questioned President Akufo-Addo’s comments about not changing a winning team, but readily accepting the resignation of the two.
“From the onset, the president said he would not change a winning team and yet the winning team is falling apart…,” said Benjamin Quashie in Twi.
Taking a swipe at the Trade Minister, he said Alan Kyerematen is not the man to rescue Ghana from the economic downturn.
“Alan cannot exempt himself from blame…he should have resigned earlier when he thought that the government was not heeding his advice rather than now telling Ghanaians things could have been done in a different way…”
He also described the Agric Minister, Afriyie Akoto as an intolerant person who cannot take criticism.
