The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ahanta West in the Western Region, Ebenezer Kojo Kum, is said to have repeatedly indicated his decision to resign as a legislator.
It appears the health of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, who has not been well for some time now, is taking a toll on his ability to discharge his responsibilities as the representative of the people of Ahanta West in the legislature.
Kojo Kum, who was the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, resigned from his position on February 3, 2023, due to his ill health.
Subsequently, a news report by Kessben TV claimed Mr. Kojo Kum has written to the national leadership of the NPP that he wants to step down for health reasons on two occasions.
The Kessben TV report indicated that the party’s leadership wants the Ahanta West legislator to continue, but his family is insisting that he has to resign because he cannot continue due to his health.
The NPP MP recently returned from the United States of America, where he received some medical treatment.
He has been sick since 2021.
If Kojo Kum finally resigns, it would lead to the 3rd by-election of the 8th Parliament of Ghana.
Already, two by-elections have been held for this parliament, the Assin North and the Kumawu by-elections.
Ebenezer Kojo Kum secured 27,946 votes representing 51.60 percent of the total valid votes cast in the 2020 parliamentary elections in Ahanta West to beat NDC’s Dr Emmanuel Okumi Andoh who polled 23,957 which represented 44.24 percent of votes cast.
