“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered…” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5)
Due to its patient nature, love does not easily get angry. Having a short fuse and flaring up at the least provocation is a sign that love is in short supply.
Of a truth, the deeds and misdeeds of people can sometimes be annoying. Consciously or unconsciously, intentionally or unintentionally, people may rub you in the wrong way more often than you expect. But love maintains its emotional control having in mind the best conducts of people are still imperfect.
But how can this be done? An effective practical way is to make excuses for people. Someone spoke to you rudely probably because they were battling depression themselves. Someone was unkind to you probably because they were hurt. Giving people the benefit of the doubt can help assuage anger and avoid the temptation of vengeance.
Love gets tough right here. But that is the nature of God and the ultimate level of godly virtue. Whenever we feel weak, let’s pray for God’s grace as we work towards the highest mark of character.
