“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest–and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.” (Proverbs 6:10-11)
Beware of the “little sleep” that robs you of your entire fortune. This little sleep refers to the taking of rest at the wrong time. Squandering time in leisure at the point where one should have invested it in hard work is that little sleep that causes havoc.
Success does not come cheaply. It requires diligence both to attain and maintain anything worthwhile in life. And while at it never slack for a moment, lest you lose something precious to you.
It’s sluggishness that causes us to fold our arms when they should be busily working. It’s complacency that tricks us to withdraw from hard work at the little sign of success.
The previous few verses of the chapter advise us to go to the ant and learn this vital lesson. It stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. This explains its year-round flourishing.
Keep on working hard and only permit yourself the productive rest at the appropriate time and you will prosper like the ant.
