Annie Sherwood, born in New York in 1835, was the author of the hymn, “I Need Thee Every Hour.” In her own words, the following was the inspiration behind the hymn:
“I remember well the morning when in the midst of the daily cares of my home, I was so filled with the sense of the nearness of the Master, that wondering how one could live without him either in joy or pain, these words ‘I Need Thee Every Hour’ were ushered into my mind…”
May you be inspired by the lyrics to ponder over your own nearness to your Maker.
- I need thee ev’ry hour,
Most gracious Lord.
No tender voice like thine
Can peace afford.
I need thee, oh, I need thee;
Ev’ry hour I need thee!
Oh, bless me now, my Savior;
I come to thee!
- I need thee ev’ry hour;
Stay thou nearby.
Temptations lose their pow’r
When thou art nigh. - I need thee ev’ry hour,
In joy or pain.
Come quickly and abide,
Or life is vain. - I need thee ev’ry hour,
Most holy One.
Oh, make me thine indeed,
Thou blessed Son!
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:8)
