“Love does not delight in evil…” (1 Corinthians 13:6)
As we grow in agape – godly, selfless love – we understand that love does not delight in evil or iniquity. The root word rendered evil also means injustice. It refers to anything and everything that falls short of God’s holy standard.
This can be viewed from multiple perspectives. Firstly, love will not lower its moral standard simply to please others. The God-kind of love honors God more than it pleases men. True love will not disobey God in the attempt to please you.
Secondly, agape will not delight in others bending God’s precepts in order to please them. If I have to fornicate or commit adultery with you or lie to others about you to prove my love for you it’s not agape!
Thirdly, agape which does not delight in injustice will not be thrilled when adversity befalls others. Here is where love is tested. If you feel any amount of joy in your heart at the demotion or downfall of others, it simply means you do not love them.
In our highly competitive world today, agape is under serious threat. Many people secretly wish for the downfall of their colleagues and friends simply for them to rise above them. May God help us to keep in mind that true love does not delight in evil.
