“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” (1 Corinthians 13:4)
We are back to our love series. The next characteristic of love is that it is not proud. Pride directly gets in the way of love because it is an overestimation of oneself and harbours contempt for others.
Love requires adjusting one’s nature, interests and preferences to suit the wellbeing of another. Without humility one cannot do so.
It is humility that allows us to be genuine, vulnerable, open and honest. It takes humility to admit one’s faults and to ask for forgiveness.
Often times, when conflicts persist in any relationship, pride is the underlying factor. If misunderstanding lingers between any two people, either one of them or both of them are proud. And refusing to admit this is itself a sign of pride.
Saint Augustine once said, “It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels.”
No relationship or friendship can blossom if pride is left unchecked. When pride is ejected from the heart, love can then flourish.
