Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. (Genesis 2:19)
From a biblical point of view, taxonomy – the science of naming, describing, and classifying things – is probably the oldest science and Adam was the first taxonomist.
But what necessitated Adam’s responsibility of naming and describing all that God had created. Could God not have named them and simply presented the list to Adam? Well, it’s because God had given man dominion over everything He made.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis 1:26)
The lesson here is that in order to effectively exercise dominion over any sphere of influence, you must first of all know and understand that domain. Are you leading a youth group or a team of engineers? You must be able to name each element of their nature.
To stretch it even further, if you’re leading any group of people, make it your goal to be able to name and describe each member of that group. Your ability to name determines your ability to have dominion.
