A few months ago this year, Ari Wallack, a professor at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs, published a book entitled “Longpath”. The book is packed with lessons that address the habit of short-term thinking and teaches us to become the great ancestors our future needs by cultivating a long-term mentality.
If we are not careful, the pressures of life will box us into being preoccupied with short-term thoughts and focusing only on meeting our immediate needs. Jesus addressed it this way:
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ (Matthew 6:31)
It’s definitely important to meet our present needs. But these needs never cease nor end. They are renewed everyday. Jesus therefore teaches us that our lives will be much more fruitful if we expand our horizon to focus on the goals of the kingdom of God. This will make us a blessing to the next generation and beyond. And interestingly, our needs will get met along the way.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)
May God help us to overcome the pressures of the here and now by embracing the big picture of the hereafter.
