Central Regional Minister, Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan, has threatened to take legal action against the governing New Patriotic Party over her alleged dismissal from the party.
The dismissal, which was made by the Agona West Constituency Executive Committee, stems from Justina Assan’s alleged support and sponsorship of an independent candidate, Cynthia Morrison, against the party’s elected candidate, Mr. Chris Arthur.
Madam Justina Marigold Assan was allegedly expelled from the party together with 282 other members of the NPP for their alleged anti-party activities in the lead up to the just ended December 7, presidential and parliamentary elections.
At a meeting held on December 15, 2024, at Swedru Humility Lodge, party members condemned Marigold Assan’s actions, accusing her of covertly sponsoring Mrs. Cynthia Morrison’s campaign through her aides.
The party executives in the constituency therefore took a decisive stance against all members who campaigned for the independent candidate, as calls for Justina Marigold Assan to be barred from holding herself up as a member in the constituency grow.
The meeting, chaired by Constituency Chairman Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, was attended by key party figures, including council elders, patrons, founding members, former executives, electoral area coordinators, members of the Disciplinary Committee, and the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Onumah Coleman.
But the Regional Minister is bent on fighting back as she hints of pursuing the matter in court.
In responding to her dismissal, Mrs. Assan’s lawyers have written to the Constituency Chairman demanding detailed information about her dismissal within 24 hours.
However, the NPP Assistant Constituency Secretary, Patience Abban, has replied her, advising Assan’s lawyers to follow the proper structures and procedures for addressing such concerns in the party.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Gibrine Tanko had noted the expulsion of the 283 members was unanimously agreed upon by the meeting attendees, citing Article 3(9)(1) of the NPP constitution as the basis for the decision. This article empowers the party to take disciplinary action against members whose actions are deemed detrimental to its progress or unity.
Explaining the rationale for the expulsion, the Constituency Chairman and other leaders of the party alleged that the affected members either actively campaigned against the party’s candidate or provided financial and logistical support to others to do so on their behalf.
