Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has summoned the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Shi Ting Wang, over the ongoing maltreatment of Ghanaians and Africans in general in China over the Covid-19 outbreak.
She has also condemned the development, which Africans in China have described as callous, and wants it addressed immediately.
There have been several reports of African immigrants in China being forced out of homes and hotels because there is a wild claim in the country that they brought coronavirus into China.
African missions in China had an emergency meeting over the issue to find solution to the disturbing development.
Africans in the provinces of Guangdon and Fujian are said to be the most affected by the ill-treatment with many fearing they could be exposed to the virus.
Meanwhile, Madam Ayorkor Botchwey in a statement on Saturday said she has been briefed on the development which she described as “inhumane treatment”.
“I regret and highly condemn this act of ill-treatment and racial discrimination,” the minister stressed.
The Chinese government has therefore been asked to address the issue which has the potential to spark diplomatic row between the People’s Republic of China and Africa.
“I have therefore summoned the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Shi Ting Wang to register my disappointment and call for his Government to immediately address the situation and bring their Officials to order.”
The Foreign Affairs Minister assured that, “A formal communication from the Government of Ghana will be issued within the next 24 hours to address the situation at hand.”
