Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
Mr. Hughton was fired after the Senior National Team performed abysmally in their first three matches in the ongoing 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast; preventing the team from advancing to the knock out stage of the competition.
His sacking was announced by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Tuesday, January 23 , 2024.
“The GFA wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect. The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars,” said the GFA in a statement.
According to the GFA, it will provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars in the coming days.
Although Chris Hughton claimed responsibility for Ghana’s poor performance after the 2-2 draw with Mozambique, that did not save him from being sacked as some Ghanaians felt he should have resigned on his own.
The Stars last game made them third in their Group B with just two points.
Meanwhile, some members of the general public are also calling for the head of GFA boss Kurt Okraku, noting that firing the head coach is not enough to bring the needed change to revive the dying Black Stars.
