The award is in recognition of David Andoh’s journalistic contributions to the development of the environment. David, who works with Myjoyonline.com won the award with his photo story ‘Ghana Beyond Filth’ which sought to increase awareness on sanitation in Ghana. The two-time winner of the Ghana Journalist Association’s Photojournalist of the Year’s photo story captured the filthy conditions around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra. A citation presented to him read “In recognition for your extraordinary and outstanding achievement and merit in service to the country and humanity at large.” David says he is honoured by the award and is motivated to do more. “The environment has been my key focus area for the past 15 years, so I am very grateful that the people have seen what I am doing,” he added. He dedicated the award to his colleagues at Myjoyonline.com. The Attorney General, Gloria Akuffo and her predecessor Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong were also honoured for their outstanding environmental leadership achievements. The award also recognized the roles Members of Parliament, Municipal and District Chief Executives have played in their various communities. Organizers of the award believe creating a sustainable future for the nation requires a collective effort and bold environmental leadership. The recognition, for them, is a form of accountability adding that the awardees have capitalized on their unique capabilities to drive environmental progress where politics could not.
