The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has defended his assertion that Ghana urgently needs a “reset” amid current economic difficulties.
At the party’s manifesto launch in Winneba, Central Region, Mahama described Ghana as a “bleeding country” in critical need of transformation.
He urged voters to support positive change, promising that an NDC victory would combat cronyism, corruption, state capture, and economic hardships.
In response, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia argued that Ghana needs an “upgrade” rather than a “reset.”
During a media engagement on Sunday, August 25, Dr. Bawumia outlined 14 key commitments for his 2024 election campaign, including job creation and developing a world-class digital economy.
In a rebuttal at the NDC’s National House to House campaign launch, Mahama elaborated on his “reset” concept.
He explained that the country is so fundamentally broken that it requires a complete reset rather than an upgrade.
Mahama said, “I have said that this is a reset, but somebody says it is an upgrade, but how do you upgrade something that is broken, the engine is spoilt, so how do you upgrade it? You need to reset the engine properly and put it in the shape where it can be upgraded and so we need to reset this country.”
The NDC flagbearer emphasised that his call for a reset extends beyond the economy to encompass governance and public attitudes.
“When we talk about resetting we are not talking only about the economy and so at the manifesto launch I didn’t talk only about the economy, I talked about Ghana needs a reset, our economy needs a reset, our governance needs a rest, our attitudes need a rest.
“People didn’t notice I added attitude. You don’t upgrade attitude, you reset and correct. You don’t upgrade governance, you reset because governance is astray and so we need to reset this country and we can only do that with all of us. So let’s all consider it as a labour of love, a labour to set up a legacy.”
