After a disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana, Inaki Williams bounced back in style, leading Athletic Bilbao to a stunning 4-2 victory over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals on Wednesday night.
Williams, who failed to impress in Ivory Coast as Ghana suffered a group stage exit, left the Black Stars hotel with a private jet and arrived in Spain on Wednesday morning, ready to make an impact in the big game. And boy, did he deliver!
Starting the game from the bench, Williams was introduced into the game at Estadio San Mames in the second half, replacing Adu Ares in the 59th minute. The forward caused chaos for the Barcelona defence, using his speed and agility to create scoring opportunities for his team.
His efforts paid off late in the first half of extra time, when he scored his team’s third goal, securing a crucial lead for Athletic Bilbao. But Williams wasn’t done yet. In injury time of the second half of extra time, he set up his younger brother, Nico Williams, to score and secure a thrilling 4-2 victory for Athletic Club.
Gorka Guruzeta and Oihan Sancet scored the other goals for Athletic Club, while Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal netted the consolation goals for Barcelona.
With 10 goals in all competitions this season, Williams continues to excel at Bilbao, cementing his status as a fan favourite.
