Hip-hop Song of the year winner at the just ended VGMA 2019 has imbibed the winning mentality in Ghanaian students charging them to win the ultimate in this year’s Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition. Kwesi Arthur who is a Commonwealth Ambassador was part of a three-school tour of the Greater Accra and Tema Regions to motivate the pupils to take part in the enviable essay competition, the oldest in the world since 1883. School activities virtually came to a halt in all the three schools as pupils mobbed and cheered the multiple award winner, whilst still promising to make a good impression in this year’s Essay Competition. The only time, Ghana has won the ultimate was in 1992, but the pupils from the three schools have promised to make Ghana proud in this year’s competition which is under the theme “A Connected Commonwealth” Roman Ridge School The tour, led by the PR and Communications Head at the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS), Nathan Gadugah together with Denise Oteng, Research head at the RCS as well as Kwesi Arthur and his management team started at the Roman Ridge School, four consecutive winners of the competition in Ghana. It did not take too long for the otherwise serene school environment to turn upside down with obviously excited pupils, chanting, waving and singing the songs of Kwesi Arthur. With each student itching to listen to and have a close-up with the hip-hop song of the year winner, an assembly was quickly organized for the delegation to address the students. The reception was overwhelming. Principal of the School Valerie Mainoo, thoroughly amazed at the excitement charged the pupils to show the same level of excitement every other morning. “You have been four time winners of this competition and I am proud of you. The time has come for you to win the ultimate,” Nathan Gadugah, who represented the Commonwealth Africa head, John Apea said to the charged pupils. It was tumultuous when Kwesi Arthur took over the microphone. The pupils couldn’t wait. “The songs I sing, I write them. I use creativity to put all that together. Through the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition you can also build your creativity by writing,” Arthur said to wild applause. And when he sang a line from his “Nobody” track the students were in ecstatic mood. The students returned the gesture with an impressive performance much to amazement of Arthur. La Wireless The next stop was La Wireless Cluster of Schools, a public school and a major partner to the RCS. The mood was no different from that of Roman Ridge. The students, some of whom were on break quickly had to cut short their break time to welcome Kwesi Arthur. The Commonwealth Ambassador challenged the students to brave the odds, study and become responsible citizens in future. Having attended a public school himself, Kwesi Arthur said the secret to a better performance is reading and writing. He challenged the students to take part in this year’s Essay Competition in order to sharpen their writing potentials and their creative abilities. He could not have left without performing a line or two of his hit-tracks. DPS At the Delhi Public School, activities came to a standstill. Like wild fire, information about the presence of Kwesi Arthur in the school had spread. In no time Assembly had been called. It was show time! Even before he would enter the main Assembly auditorium, Kwesi Arthur was met with loud chants, applause and excitement by the teachers and students. They were uncontrollable in excitement. After Nathan Gadugah took the students through the rudiments of the essay writing competition, the students demanded a full performance by Kwesi Arthur. He obliged. The auditorium was in raptors. An attempt by Arthur to take a selfie with the students nearly resulted in a stampede. The Director of DPS Mr. Mukesh Thakwani who was so overwhelmed by the interaction made a presentation to Kwesi Arthur.
