Former National Security Coordinator, Brig. General Nunoo Mensah (retd) has concluded, after reading through the military cooperation agreement between Ghana and USA, that the agreement will benefit only the US. He was emphatic that when ratified, Ghana will be left in the dark. The former senior military officer underscored that any country that associates with the USA automatically becomes an enemy to militant groups in the world that have been terrorising the USA. Speaking on Onua Midday News on Friday, Nunoo Mensah recalled that during the era of Ghana’s first president, Dr Nkrumah, it was Ghana first; the same way when you go to America it’s America first. He warned, looking at the situation, the tussle between America and Boko Haram has degenerated into a stage where the Americans cannot fight from their country and are therefore looking for vulnerable countries to set their base. This, he said, will drag Ghana into battles we are not ready to engage in. Brig. Nunoo Mensah said though America is a powerful country with all resources at its disposal, what Ghana needs is not a military base but peace in the country, development, abundance of job opportunities to do away with youth unemployment among others. Both government of Ghana and the US Embassy in Ghana have denied concerns that the agreement will lead to US establishing a military base in Ghana. However, a cross section of Ghanaians championed by the opposition National Democratic Congress have opposed the agreement.
