The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has given the nod to the 10 persons who have expressed interest in leading the party into the 2024 general election as the presidential candidate.
After last week’s four-day vetting marathon, the party’s Vetting Committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye indicated that the 10 persons have distinguished themselves worthy of bearing the flag for the NPP.
The report of the committee was submitted to the party on Monday, July 10, 2023, NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong announced in a statement on Wednesday.
“In the report, the Committee recommended the under-listed individuals as eligible to participate in the upcoming Presidential Primaries subject to the approval of the National Council,” the statement remarked.
The eligible candidates are: Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Kwadwo Poku, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Boakye Agyarko, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, Dr Owusu Afriyei Akoto, Joe Ghartey, and Francis Addai-Nimonh.
Other Members of the 11-member Vetting Committee are Kwasi Amoako Atta, Stephen Abankwa Sekyere, Osei Bonsu Amoah, Lord Oblitey Commey, Frank Davies, Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, and Adelaide Ahwireng.
The rest are; Osei Bonsu Amoah, the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North Constituency and a member of the Vetting Committee was appointed the Spokesperson for the Committee with Evans Nimako, Director for Research and Elections of the Party also appointed Secretary for the committee.
The primary is expected to come off in November 2023.
However, per the party’s arrangement, since there are more than five aspirants that have been recommended by the vetting committee, there will be a special electoral college to whittle the number down to five before the November election.
