The governing New Patriotic Party has admonished its members to remain calm in the wake of Alan Kyerematen’s announcement that he has quit the party to run as an independent presidential candidate in next year’s general elections.
Mr. Kyerematen, who is a founding member of the NPP, said his decision to go independent was driven by his belief that the approach would enable him to better serve the interests of the Ghanaian people, a dream him claimed has not been appreciated by the party.
“The NPP as it exists now has very little resemblance to the Party that I joined in 1992 and helped to nurture. The Party has been hijacked by a selected group of Party leaders and elders, government appointees, ‘behind the curtain power brokers’ and some unscrupulous Party apparatchiks,” Mr. Kyerematen claimed on Monday, September 5 as he announced his resignation from the NPP.
But reacting to Alan’s announcement punctuated with some allegations against the NPP, the party’s General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said Alan’s decision was “unfortunate”.
“The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken notice of the unfortunate decision of Mr. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, a long-standing member of the Party to forfeit his membership and contest as an independent presidential candidate in the 2024 general elections.”
He noted, “The Party leadership is by this medium, urging the rank and file of our great Party to remain calm and await an official address by the Party to Mr. Kyerematen’s resignation at 14:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at the Party headquarters.”
