Residents along the Ablekuma-Manhia road have charged government to show commitment and speed up construction of their roads or will hit the streets again.
The residents on Monday blocked the main road and burnt car tyres in the middle of the road, halting all movements – human and vehicular – to and from the area.
About eight residents were arrested by the Greater Accra Regional Police command in connection with the protest over the poor state of their road.
The demonstrators stopped personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service from dousing the fire from the burning tyres.
Interestingly, moment after the police had dispelled the demonstrators, grading of the road began, but residents are insisting on asphalt.
The Assembly Member for Manhia Electoral Area, Malik Abbas in an interview with Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Bright Kwasi Asempa on Tuesday said they had planned to embark on a continuous demonstration for a week, but due to what transpired on Monday, they have put the demonstration on hold.
“We have given the MCE one week ultimatum as we monitor the progress of the road and I have spoken to my people…we don’t want just grading. We want asphalt road”.
Municipal Chief Executive of the Ghana West Municipality, Clement Wilkinson, in an interview said, “There are three contractors working on the road and we have spoken to them to speed up the construction. We shall meet the contractors again on Friday over the road.”
