President Nana Akufo-Addo has, on behalf Ghanaians, congratulated Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election, for a second successive term as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. According to President Akufo-Addo, his re-election is a renewal of the confidence the Nigerian people have in his policies, which he said hinged on job creation, diversification of the economy, particularly the strong revival of Nigeria’s agriculture and the fight against corruption. “I congratulate also the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), for maintaining control, in an emphatic manner, over the Senate and the House of Representatives,” the president said in his congratulatory statement on Wednesday. He expressed a “sincere hope” that President Buhari will continue on the path of delivering unity, security, prosperity to the people of Nigeria . In addition, President Akufo-Addo urged President Buhari to help build a thick relationship between Ghana and Nigeria on a shared agenda of stability, security, development and prosperity. Muhammadu Buhari won in 19 of the 36 states. The APC’s Buhari had 15.2 million votes while the PDP’s Atiku had 11.3 million. Abubakar Atiku, the presidential candidate of the largest opposition party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was also applauded by President Akufo-Addo for the decision to contest his dissatisfaction of the election results through a constitutional process. “It is testimony to his credentials as a well-established statesman,” the President of Ghana lauded Atiku. President Akufo-Addo acknowledged that strengthening of Nigeria’s democracy and consolidating the peace and stability of Africa’s most populous country is important for the progress of the continent. “Warm congratulations, once again, to President Muhammadu Buhari, and to the people of Nigeria.
