The possibility of a Savannah region being carved out of the Northern region appears certain as the proposed new region records high voter turnout in Thursday’s referendum after a massive campaign for YES was well accepted by the electorate. At the Town Park Polling Station in Damongo constituency for instance, 3news.com’s Zubaida Ismail reports that 606 out of 808 registered voters turned up to cast their ballots. At the Presbyterian Primarily Polling Centre, 356 voted out of the 486 registered voters. The centre also recorded a 100% YES votes with no spoilt ballots or NO vote. The proposed Savannah region would have 6 districts, with 583 polling centres. It has 252,902 registered voters out which 126,451 are expected to vote in the referendum to pave way for the creation of the new if at least 101,160 vote YES after 50% of the registered voters had turned up to vote. Prior to the referendum, the Overlord of the Kpembe traditional area, Dari Bismarck Haruna Banbagne called on all residents on Gonjaland to massively vote YES for the Savannah region. The Kpembewura had indicated that he expects a 100 percent voter turnout, which should translates into a 100 percent YES votes in the referendum.
