You may have heard it often said that “The best form of defence is attack.” This proverbial phrase dates back to the 18th century in the US, and it’s intended as a military tactic.
However, when it comes to issues of morality and integrity, the best form of defence is not attack but absence. Whenever we are beset with moral temptations, we are advised by God’s word to FLEE.
Being absent at the point of temptation is the best form of moral defence.
“Flee the evil desires of youth…
Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments…” (2 Timothy 2:22-23)
The word flee also means to run away, to vanish (disappear), or to escape. They all ensure one’s absence.
The wisdom for maintaining one’s moral uprightness is to avoid tempting situations. So long as you remain absent when sin calls, you’re safe.
