2016 campaign was expensive; Ade Coker admits, backs moderation call

August 5, 2018
Reading Time: 2 mins read

Joseph Ade Coker[/caption] The Greater Accra chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker has backed calls on persons seeking positions in the party, especially the flagbearers, to run a low key campaign in the build up to the 2020 elections. He conceded that in 2012 and 2016, the NDC had an “expensive campaign”, but noted that the advice for a moderate campaign was not because the party is in opposition. Mr. Ade Coker maintained that the level of hardship in the country, where people are unable to afford three square meal a day, he said, it was prudent for the party to avoid showing opulence all over. Speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise morning show, Mr. Coker remarked: “I’m campaigning but you will hardly see my posters around”. He said when one realizes his or her mistakes, you need to change how things are done, hence his personal decision to set an example of being modest in campaigning. The party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah had said it will be offensive for his party to engage in lavish campaign because it is about the message they convey to the public that matters and not the huge billboards and posters all over the place. The former MP for La Dadekotopon Nii Amasah Namoaley concurred:  “Extravagant election didn’t win election as a party, rather it is the message that you send across with just two posters to create awareness”. He added, “So we should be circumspect and moderate in doing things.” Though Mr. Coker would not tell which of the frontrunners he was supporting in the NDC’s presidential race, Nii Amansah Namoaley was emphatic that he was rooting for Prof. Joshua Alabi. “Prof. Alabi amongst all the contestants will emerge as the winner,” he predicted.
