The social media platform, Diaklo, that has a mission to become “Africa’s best social network” has said it has seen an uptick in new users in the weeks following Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter.

The company – named after the Douala language word for message – was founded by Cameroonian Alain Ekambi in 2017.

Earlier this year, Dikalo announced that more than 100 million messages had been sent on the platform which is free to use and download around the world.

The social media platform is still in testing mode on Apple’s iOS system and is also available on mobile Android devices as well as through a website.

The company claimed to have 120,000 registered users in 2021 and on Monday shared on their Twitter account; “we are seeing more and more people coming to us.”

1) The last weeks have been great for Dikalo as we are seeing more and more people coming to the us. Lots of you are looking for alternative social places where you can connect safely and in a fun way. We are glad you are finding that with us. And we are just getting started. pic.twitter.com/zs2nNDauSA

Some social media users have been searching for an alternative to Twitter after Mr Musk, who styles himself as a “free speech absolutist”, started approving controversial changes, including loosening content moderation guardrails.

One of the platforms Twitter users are thought to be jumping to is Mastodon, which has been described as “the largest decentralised social network on the internet'”.

Its owners claim there were 230,000 downloads in the first week of November.
