“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking…” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5)
By divine coincidence, the seventh characteristic of love is that it’s not self-seeking. We are made perfect in love when we become selfless. Jesus gives us the ultimate example of selfless love.
“Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:4-5)
What does it mean to be self-seeking? Other versions of the bible give us good ideas. One says it is to seek one’s own benefit. Another says it is to insist on one’s own way. Either way, to be selfish is to always prioritize one’s interests above others.
The American author Colleen Hoover put it this way: “Selflessness. It should be the basis of every relationship. If a person truly cares about you, they’ll get more pleasure from the way they make you feel, rather than the way you make them feel.”
Today, a married man can look in the face of a young promising lady and say “I love you” and all he’s after is sex (self-centred pleasure). Similarly, a young lady can look at a married man and say “I love you,” caring less about what this so-called love is going to do to his family because all she’s after is money and attention (selfish interests). This is the distortion we see today.
May God help us to realize that true love seeks the best interests of others.
