The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed the female students of Chiana SHS in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region for insulting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The students were captured in a viral video circulating on social media misconducting themselves and using vulgar and unprintable words on the President. They accused the president of bringing about economic hardship among others.
Management of GES in a statement in November condemned the “unfortunate act which is against every educational and moral principle in our society”.
The GES apologised to President Akufo-Addo and subsequently suspended the students over the video.
It was announced that GES had begun investigations to unravel the circumstances surrounding the “unfortunate utterances and gestures” of the students.
Document sighted by newstitbits.com and confirmed by its sources at the Ghana Education Service revealed that the students were dismissed following the GES investigations.
Parents of the students were handed letters dismissing their wards for misconduct.
GES said it “gave approval” for the dismissal to “serve as a deterrence to other students”.
The GES explained that the conducts of the girls were “considered very undesirable, and contrary to the acceptable standards of the conduct generally required of any student in the educational system of Ghana.”
The dismissal letter dated November 29, 2022 and signed by the then Acting Director General of the GES, Dr Eric Nkansah asked that the guardians ensure that their wards hand over any school property in their possession to the school.
“It is expected that your ward will use this as a major tuning point in her life to bring the desired change in her behaviour and attitude towards life,” a copy of the letter stated.
At least five students were affected by the decision.
