Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said that Ghanaians and the football fraternity will sorely miss the late Ghana international footballer, Christian Atsu.
He stated that Atsu’s demise is a very painful loss to his family, the nation and the footballing world, especially when everyone was hoping and praying that he would be found safe and alive.
Speaking at a brief ceremony to receive the remains of the late Christian Atsu from Turkey on Sunday evening, Dr. Bawumia said that the Black Stars forward “was much loved and we will sorely miss him.”
While extending his condolences to the bereaved family and Ghanaians as a whole, the Vice President declared that the state would collaborate with the family to give him a befitting farewell.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the entire family for their loss and I would like to say that the State will be fully involved with the family in providing him a befitting burial.”
He added that “it is a very sad day that we are here to receive the remains of our brother, Christian Atsu. The earthquake that struck Turkey was devastating, and we prayed every day that passed for our brother to be found but when he was found, he was no more.”
The Vice President also prayed that the soul of Christian Atsu rests in the bosom of his maker.
The vice president further expressed his gratitude to Ghanaians for their prayers and support.
Since news of his death broke, tributes have been pouring in from Ghana and abroad to celebrate Atsu’s wonderful personality on and off the pitch.
