The Western Regional Health Directorate has withdrawn an award given to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Okobeng Mining Company Limited barely 72 hours after it was presented to him.
The revocation, according to a press release sighted by newstitbits.com follows several complaints levelled against the CEO, Nana Okobeng Amponsah and his mining firm whose activities contravene the principles of the Ghana Health Service.
The Western Regional Health Directorate routinely honours individuals for their support to the health sector as part of their Annual Performance Review process .
Nana Okobeng Amponsah, was thus presented with the award on March 28, 2023 when his name was
submitted among others for consideration this year.
But the award was withdrawn following objections with copious evidence against the operations of Okobeng Mining Company which includes environmental degradation which has significant implications for health.
“In view of the above revelations and the misrepresentations made in the media, we hereby unreservedly revoke the award presented to you on 28th March,2023 and dissociate ourselves from the operations of your company,” the statement read.
The GHS added that “we have also cited petitions by Chiefs and the youth of the area against your company for acts that run counter to the principles behind our award.”
