The Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions had the most record of road crashes since January to June 2023.
A report issued by issued by the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) on road traffic crash and casualty situation for the period saw Greater Accra recording 481 crashes while its counterpart, the Ashanti Region recorded 304.
Coincidentally, the two regions also had the most crashes for the period under review for 2022 with 532 and 295 respectively.
The Eastern, Central and Western Regions came in third, fourth and fifth respectively recording 123, 93 and 48 cases each.
The Oti Region remained the region with the least number of crashes in both 2022 and 2023 with 3 cases.
However, when it came to a regional distribution of injuries, the Ashanti region unseated Greater Accra with 340 injuries as against 288 in 2023.
The Oti Region again recorded the least injuries in both 2023(One) and 2022 (Zero).
Other details include the following:
More males were killed in road crashes than females from January to June 2023. The data reveals a ratio of 1:4, thus, for every 1 female killed, 4 males are killed. This shows a similar trend in past years of higher fatalities for males than for females.
More adults were killed in road crashes than children with a glaring ratio of 7:1.
“Likewise, from January to June, 137 (13%) persons killed were below the age of 18 years whilst 949 (87%)
were reported to have been adults (above 18years)”, read portions of the report.
In all, the report indicated that 6,904 cases of road crashes were reported from January to June this year and this involved 11,763 vehicles across the country.
