Residents of Jomoro (Nzemaland), led by the youth, have staged a peaceful protest demanding the whereabouts of the Osagyefo Power Barge.
They walked through some principal streets of Ekpu and ended at Half Assini, the capital of the Jomoro Municipal Assembly.
The Osagyefo Power Barge, according to the Deputy Minister of Energy, William Owuraku Aidoo during a recent statement on the floor of Parliament, government decommissioned the 185 MW plant which he said had suffered deterioration from excessive corrosion as a result of idleness since 2017.
But the residents are alleging that the Barge has been sold out to a scrap dealer who has dismantled the power producing plant in which 60 percent of the proceeds will go to GNPC, whilst the private dealer takes the remaining 40 percent.
The protestors are therefore calling for either a share of the proceeds to be given to them for the development of Jomoro or the entire barge to be brought back.
President of the Nzema Youth League, Dr. Patrick Ekye Kwesie said he supports whatever the youth will do to get to the bottom of the issue.
He described the disappearance of the barge as strange, noting that it’s not true that the barge got spoiled and insisted that they will do all they can as youth to get to the bottom of the matter.
Recently, the Member of Parliament in Jomoro Constituency, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, called for the prosecution of the company that was involved in the dismantling of the Osaagyefo Power Barge in her Constituency.
The MP said the action of the private company called Misag constitutes illegality because it dismantled 90% of the Barge without recourse to due process.
