The body of Ghana’s former Sports Minister, Enoch Teye Mensah popularly known as ET Mensah, is expected back home in Ghana from South Africa on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, a family source has confirmed to Newstitbits.
ET Mensah, a member of Council of State died on Sunday after battling a protracted illness. He was 77.
Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo, according to the family source, has notified the family that he wants to be at the Kotoka International Airport, together with the members of the Council of State, to receive the body of one of Ghana’s illustrious sons.
President Akufo-Addo on learning about the demise of the former Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram said he has lost a “good friend”.
In a statement, President Akufo-Addo recalled that ET Mensah “was a warm, generous, gregarious man with a keen intellect and a wonderful sense of humour.”
In a heartfelt tribute to his departed friend posted on Facebook, President Nana Akufo-Addo noted that, “In his element, you could find no better company, and was a good source of advice for me as President of the Republic. I have lost a good friend.”
Newstitbits also gathered that, the traditional authorities at Prampram, where he hailed from, would want to perform some rites over the weekend before the arrival of the body.
As a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), E.T. Mensah served in various capacities such as Minister for Education, Minister of Youth and Sports, Mayor of Accra and representative of the Council of State for the Greater Accra Region.
E.T. Mensah was elected as a member of Parliament of the second parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana during the 1996 General Election. He retained his seat as Ningo Prampram MP until 2016 when he lost the NDC’s parliamentary primary to Samuel Nartey George.
Enoch Teye Mensah was born on 17 May 1946. He was survived by a wife and seven children.
