Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has welcomed the president’s decision to reopen schools in spite of the fact that the number of the novel coronavirus in the country keeps rising.
National President of GNAT, Ms Philippa Larsen says teachers are ready to go back to the classroom and teach, provided government supports them with all the requisite personal protective equipment (PPEs) in safeguarding the wellbeing of teachers and school children.
Ms. Philippa Larsen said this in an interview with Nana Yaw Opare on Yensempa morning show on Onua FM on Monday.
She laid emphasis on the fact that GNAT presented some proposals and recommendations to government on easing restrictions on school activities, noting that most of these proposals were captured in the president’s 10th speech on COVID-19 update.
“We visited the president and presented our proposals which most of them were captured in the President’s speech, so our readiness is dependent on all the things we presented and the things His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said would be done in ensuring our safety”.
She stressed that GNAT members are prepared to return to the classroom on any given day provided all measures articulated by President Akufo-Addo are met.
She said the various teacher unions will soon meet the Ghana Education Service to elaborate on issues of much concern with regards to COVID-19 so that GNAT could intensify the education and dispel fears of the general public especially parents in allowing their children to return to school.
The national president for GNAT thus entreated parents and guardians to remain calm because the teachers are prepared to do everything possible in protecting the school children from contracting the deadly virus.
