Empower youth through green economy – Rocky Dawuni

June 4, 2020
Reading Time: 2 mins read

Grammy-nominated reggae musician Rocky Dawuni is appealing to the government to empower the youth through agriculture.

Rocky Dawuni is of the view that, to create sustainable businesses, governments need to build on green economy which he says is sustainable agriculture.

The globally recognised musician, speaking in an interview on Onua FM’s Reggae Ja show with Blakk Kobby feels not much is being done worldwide to preserve the forest and wildlife.

According to him, even the Amazon forest is at risk of people cutting done tress and killing indigenous animals.

The ‘In Ghana’ hit singer was answering a question on what flagship program he would suggest to the government to implement for the youth since he is a strong advocate for youth empowerment.

He stressed that there are more opportunities “for the youth to go into agriculture because we have the lands and we do not have to go to somebody to go borrow the land.”

To reference the need for a green economy, he said “when you read economics, Adam Smith will tell you land is the first capital and we have fertile land [in abundance] which we need to capitalise on.”

Rocky Dawuni feels people need to redefine farming by bringing new ideas and new crops that can be grown and have high value in the world market.

The reggae star wants proactive programs to train the youth to be able to grow these crops and have a ready local market to buy for the international markets which will create jobs for them.

He was worried about post harvest losses in Ghana where people produce more but do not get ready market to sell the produce or store them.

The kReggae Ja show is on every Saturday on Onua FM 95.1 between 6:30pm-9pm.
