At least five students of Bolgatanga Technical Institute were arrested Friday morning by the police for rioting. Hundreds of the students had poured onto the streets of Bolgatanga to protest the failure of school authorities to provide them with potable water, food among other essentials militating against academic work. They first presented a verbal petition to the municipal education directorate and decided to submit a petition at the Municipal Police Headquarters for action but were prevented from entering the premises. The students became aggressive and went overboard, vandalising properties, 3news.com gathered. The deputy regional police commander’s car was damaged by the students, 3news’ regional correspondent Rabiu Tanko reported. Angered by the chaotic behaviour of the students, the police fired warning shots and chased them away. Some of the students were beaten by the police for trying to resist arrest.
