The Ghana GRID Company (GRIDCo) says the power outage being experienced in Accra and other parts of the country was caused by bushfire.
The bushfire which was traced to Tarkwa in the Western Region caused all thermal plants and Bui generators to trip.
A statement by the power transmission company said the power systems disturbance occurred at 11.57 a.m. on Saturday 14th January, 2023.
“The outage occurred after GRIDCo’s 330kV Aboadze – Anwomaso line tripped followed by a number of lines in the western corridor of the grid triggering a system disturbance causing all thermal plants and Bui generators and customer loads to trip.
“A raging bush fire under GRIDCo’s high voltage lines near Tarkwa has been identified as the source of the power line trips. A fire tender from Tarkwa Goldfields is on site to bring the fire under control.”
It is however not clear when power would be restored.
According to the statement, restoration of the grid commenced immediately and efforts are ongoing to restore power to all affected areas and customers.
“GRIDCo sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused by this incidence and is working to restore normal power supply.”
Meanwhile, the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) says it will undertake a coordinated and planned 10-day maintenance shutdown of its Takoradi Regulating and Metering Station.
“This shutdown scheduled for 12th to 22nd January 2023, is to allow for the replacement of some critical valves at the facility aimed at securing the safety and integrity of the Takoradi Station. Accordingly, there will be no gas transportation from our Takoradi facility to customers in the Tema power enclave during the period of the shutdown. We will however continue to deliver gas from Nigeria to Tema based on volumes agreed between the customer and the shipper,” WAPCo said in a statement issued on January 11.
