file photo[/caption] The second in command of the James Camp Prison, ADP Christopher Nyamedi has called on government to increase its effort to ease the overcrowding situation at the various prisons. Speaking on 3FM’ Sunrise morning show with Winston Amoah on the launch of the 70 years of James Camp Prison under the theme “Reformation and Rehabilitation of the convict prisoner for public safety, ADP Nyamide decried the increasing rate of crime in society. “Congestion, holistically in the Prisons Service, has to do with limited space in the prison facility and crime increase”. He also explained that the number of remand prisoners has also contributed to the congestion at the various facilities. “Government spends so much on those who commit trivial offences,” he noted, stressing that there should be “non-custodial sentences on them”. He called for a forum to educate the public on crime reduction to help decongestion exercise in the prisons, adding that population at the prisons has far outstripped the existing facilities.
