Martin Amidu[/caption] Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has been advised to pull a break on his lamentation over the constraint facing his office and rather make noise about the successes he has chalked so far. Acknowledging challenges faced by the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Dr. Puku Adusei, Deputy Director General at the Ghana Standard Authority, however said he is privy to a number of inroads made by the establishment of the office of the Special Prosecutor. Mr. Amidu, at a National Audit Forum organised by the Ghana Audit Service in Accra last week, bemoaned: “The present situation where critical ministries and agencies have failed even with our limited constraints or refused to produce public records on demand to aid the office in critical investigations, offences running into millions of cedis, clearly demonstrates that there is divergence between the president’s vision and that of some of his appointees. “You ask for information you can’t get it, you ask for docket, the docket cannot be produced. You ask a minister for a record, the record cannot be produced. How do you fight corruption when those appointed by the president who has a vision are not coordinating with the office of the special prosecutor to achieve his mandate? That is the challenge we have to face.” His outburst incurred the displeasure of some government appointees with the Attorney General Gloria Akuffo pointing out that there is “no breakdown” like being portrayed by Mr. Amidu. Contributing to a discussion on TV3’s news review programme, NewDay on Saturday, Dr. Poku Adusei said a number of government assets in private hands have been recovered by the EOCO with the support of Martin Amidu. He said this and many other successes have been chalked by the Special Prosecutor even with the limited resources. Dr. Poku Adusei is therefore asking Mr. Amidu to also focus on “trumpeting the success story” of his office, and stop painting a gloomy picture to the public. However, a lecturer at the University of Education Winneba, Dr. Ahmed Jinapor pointed out considering the euphoria that heralded the creation of the Office of the Special Prosecutor, the achievements being referred to by Dr. Adusei are not worth trumpeting.
