Corruption in Ghana could reduce if Special Prosecutor succeeds – GII

February 22, 2018
Reading Time: 2 mins read

The Corporate Affairs Manager of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Mr. Michael Boadi, is hopeful Ghana would improve in its corruption rating if the Special Prosecutor succeeds in fighting the age-old canker within the public service. According to him, the Special Prosecutor is in good position to reduce the menace, pointing out that he “would help reduce corruption if he does his work well, and within the law”. He also added that the fight against corruption is likely be won if the Right to Information Bill is passed. Ghana has recorded its worst ranking in the Corruption Perception index since 2012. It dropped 11 place from the 2016 rankings to 81 out of 180 countries in the latest Transparency International  Corruption Perception Index report released by its local chapter, the GII on Wednesday. Executive Director of the GII, Linda Ofori- Kwafo, had said Ghana’s poor ranking in 2017 is a reflection of inadequate investigations, prosecutions and sanctioning of corrupt officials. Commenting on the report on Onua FM’s “Ghana Dadwane” show on Thursday afternoon, the Corporate Affairs Manager of GII explained that the latest report is a compilation of reports by the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Economic Intelligence Unit and other reputable international organizations. “This report is a compilation of the perceptions of the ordinary people and that of business experts”, he told Michael Nana Yaw Opare, the host of the “Ghana Dadwane” show. Michael Boadi further remarked that the education and campaign against corruption has not been properly received by the citizenry, urging the media to be at the forefront of fighting the menace, and helping the government in the public campaign against the canker.
