Ken Agyapong to be sanctioned tomorrow; expulsion off the table

Parliament decides Kennedy Agyapong’s fate Saturday[/caption] The Deputy Chairman of the Privileges Committee of Parliament, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer has discounted the possibility of the House expelling Kennedy Agyapong from Parliament. The worst thing that can happen to the Assin Central MP, who has been found to be “in contempt of parliament” after calling Parliament “cheap” and “useless”, would either be suspension or reprimand, Egyapa Mercer noted. The decision would however be taken by Parliament when the House reconvenes on Saturday, July 28 in the morning. “Accordingly, the Committee recommends to the House to adopt its Report and sanction Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong by suspending him for the rest of this session or reprimand him,” report of the Privileges Committee which sat on his contempt case read in part. He explained that the Committee only enquired into the contempt allegation as leveled against Mr. Agyapong but “did not trial him”. Mr. Egyapa Mercer who is also the MP for Sekondi explained why his colleague cannot be made to forfeit  his seat. “He has not committed any crime to warrant being expelled entirely from the house,” he said, adding that even at the committee level, members could not conclude on prescribing a specific sanction for him. When whether Mr. Agyapong should be reprimanded or suspended was put to vote, members split, he revealed. The two possible sanctions have therefore been thrown into the domain of the main House to be decided on tomorrow, Saturday 28th July 2018.
