Delegates participating in the New Juaben South constituency elections of the National Democratic Congress flared up when ballot papers overly delayed, issuing threats to their regional executives. They threatened to boycott the elections, accusing the regional executives of plotting to rig the elections for their preferred candidates. Police personnel had to step in to calm rising tempers as some delegates attempted to move the Electoral Commission’s set up for the elections. Some 1,242 delegates from 138 branches are expected to vote in the constituency elections on Saturday. All 58 aspirants had given their one minute speech for voting to take place but as of 12 noon the ballots papers had not arrived. Acting Deputy Secretary of the NDC, Annor Dompreh announced that the papers would arrive within 5 minutes and pleaded with the delegates to be tolerant. But some delegates would not accept any excuse, suspecting the regional executives may have something up their sleeves. As at 12:40pm ballot boxes had still not arrived. Election committee members and aspirants were called for an emergency meeting to decide what next. Delegates had arrived at Eredec Hotel, the voting centre, at 7am Saturday June 23, 2018 . Meanwhile, a member of the electoral committee Catherina Ayakwa, feels it’s a normal thing that occurs in elections and asks delegates to exercise restraint. She explained ballot papers were printed in Accra and were waiting for delivery. Source: Yvonne Neequaye |3news.com | Ghana]]>
