NDC holds presidential election on Dec. 7; warns against flashy campaigns

August 2, 2018
Reading Time: 3 mins read

General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah[/caption] The General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has cautioned leadership of the party, at all levels, not to commit the structures of the party in support of any of the persons seeking to contest the flagbearership position of the party. At a news conference to officially launch the campaign season for the flagbearership race, the general secretary also cautioned the aspirants to be decorous in their campaign devoid of attacks. [caption id="attachment_62809" align="aligncenter" width="564"] Mr Bagbin [M], Mahama [L] and Prof. Alabi [R] are those among those eyeing the flagbearership slot of the party[/caption]He insisted none of the aspirants should engage in flamboyant campaigning, stressing the country is in distress. He therefore reiterated that due to the dire economic situation in the country,  no aspirant should waste resources since the bigger task is in the 2020 elections. The election to choose a leader of the largest opposition party will therefore be held in December 7 this year. Johnson Asiedu Nketia urged prospective candidates to notify the national executive committee of the party before embarking on any campaign in order to avoid individuals using the name of the party for their personal interest. [caption id="attachment_93627" align="aligncenter" width="587"] Mr. Sylvester Mensah [L] says he is unwavered by the decision of some NDC MPs to endorse Mr. Mahama [R][/caption]He further announced the postponement of the regional elections from August 25 to September 1 this year. Touching on the declaration of support for former president Mahama by some Members of Parliament, he stressed that the MPs did no wrong since the declaration of support did not come from the parliamentary caucus but some individual MPs. [caption id="attachment_22098" align="aligncenter" width="564"] Ekwow Spio-Garbrah[/caption] Persons who have declared their intention to contest the presidential slot include 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, former Vice Chancellor of UPSA Prof. Joshua Alabi, former Trade Minister Ekwow Spio-Garbrah and former CEO of NHIA Sylvester Mensah.
