Police rescued 339 victims of human trafficking in 2017

The Anti-human Trafficking Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service rescued 339 victims including 190 children last year. The Director General of Police CID, DCOP Maame Yaa Tiwah Addo-Danquah, who made this known at the annual get-together popularly known as West Africa Security Service Association (WASSA) in Accra said 327 of the victims were Ghanaians and 12 foreign nationals. For three consecutive years, Ghana has been ranked on tier 2 watch list of trafficking in persons report by the United States Department. This means the country is not doing well in curbing  human trafficking, a situation that is threatening to downgrade the United States development support for Ghana if steps are not taken to reverse the trend. The 339 victims rescued during 2017 included 217 males and 122 female, with 190 them being children. Meanwhile, Deputy Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, has tasked the CID to build consensus in order to help deal decisively with crime. The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Madam Gloria Akuffo called for closer collaboration between the AG’s department and the police CID to ensure effective investigation and prosecution of cases. Madam Gloria Akuffo further called for constant knowledge sharing among personnel of the CID to promote efficiency. Source: 3news.com | Ghana]]>
